This cozy café invites you to take a step into a haven of tranquility, where the soothing sounds of smooth jazz create the perfect backdrop for your gastronomic adventure.

As you step through the doors, you're greeted by the rich aroma of freshly prepared dishes, each crafted with a personal touch by the owners, Kurihara san and Fusa san. With their extensive backgrounds as well-traveled sailors who have explored the world, they've poured their love and experiences into every aspect of this charming establishment. The intimate setting is adorned with handwritten notes and memories from visitors, making it feel like a home away from home.

Among the standout offerings on the menu, the Chicken Curry shines brightly. This dish is not just a meal, but a comforting embrace of flavors that will linger in your memory long after you've left. Combined with the lively atmosphere—where locals gather to share stories, practice languages, or simply enjoy each other's company—this café truly thrives as a community hub.

Patrons rave about the inviting environment; Sharyn describes it as "a haven of tranquility," while Emily recalls an unforgettable experience where the owners welcomed her during a storm, serving delicious food and drinks with genuine hospitality. It’s not just the food that captures your heart; it’s the kindness and openness of the owners that weave a rich tapestry of warmth and camaraderie. As Monika Vinsova notes, “It’s a very intimate and welcoming spot,” where every visit feels like a reunion with good friends.

As the sun sets, the café transforms into an even more vibrant atmosphere, perfect for enjoying live music or engaging conversations with locals. Whether you’re looking for a quiet place to unwind with a good book or an engaging spot to meet new friends, Cafe Taniwha promises an experience unlike any other in Ishigaki.

The café is not merely a place to grab a bite; it’s a story. A story told through every dish and every conversation. So, if you find yourself in Ishigaki, make sure to stop by Cafe Taniwha. It’s an invitation to not only satisfy your palate but also to connect with the heart and soul of the local community.

A haven of tranquility with a smooth jazz backdrop. I recommend the Chicken Curry. I hope to return one evening when there is live music.

What an experience! The owners are well-traveled sailors who bought their boat in New Zealand and spent three years sailing back to Japan with their three kids. The place is full of character—set to relaxing jazz music, decorated with handwritten notes and memories from past visitors and friends, and filled with charming, personal details. It’s a very intimate and welcoming spot, and truly one of the most joyful and memorable moments of our trip to Japan. A must-visit if you’re in the area!

Cafe Taniwha is the best place to go in Ishigaki if you want to interact with the locals. It is owned by the vibrant couple Kurihara san and Fusa san, who moved to Ishigaki from Tokyo 40 years ago. They have the interesting life story and are the most open-minded people that I have ever met . You will be amazed by how vibrant this place becomes at night, with people studying Spanish, practicing Ukulele, or simply chatting with each other. Some times they also hold live music events, don't miss out! Recommended menu: Go-ya juice (freshly made bitter melon juice), Go-ya juice mixed with Awamori , Mojito (with fresh mints), coffee set (cake and coffee for only 600 yen) and the vegetarian curry rice. Fantastic experience - the owners are the friendliest people in the world, and let us take shelter during a storm - serving up amazing food and drinks the whole time. Highly recommend!

Lovely place, people and great food Such good vibes. The owners are so lovely. We made jokes and played on the piano. This all combined with great curry. We will be back!
